Household Items

These are items that you might see around the home. They aren’t safe for humans, and they are not safe for dogs. The difference is, dogs might not be able to tell the difference between these items and their toys.

Batteries

From the AA batteries that live in the TV remote, to the round disc batteries that go in watches, even things electrical things that can still work without a cable attached all have batteries in. If a dog manages to swallow or chew anything with a battery in, it can be incredibly harmful.

Glow Sticks

These colourful luminous sticks and bracelets, often used at parties, contain chemicals that could cause your dog to froth at the mouth, vomit, and generally have tummy pain. It also seems that cats seem to love them, even though they are really bad for them too. If you do have cats as well as dogs, make sure that neither of them can get their paws on them.

Silica Gel Sachets

These are the little packets you see in newly purchased things like shoes, electronics etc. The gel is put next to certain goods to remove moisture to stop mould growing or electronics getting damaged. It is not the removal of water that causes the problem for dogs and us if we eat it. They also don’t release any bad chemicals into us either. When they are in the tummy, they don’t react there either and THAT’S THE PROBLEM. Neither us, nor dogs can digest them, so if you were to eat them, they could cause a blockage either in the form of choking or in the gut, both being really bad.

Cigarettes / eCigarettes / Nicotine patches

Cigarettes have been scientifically proven to be awful for humans. Part of the reason they are so dangerous to us is that they contain a substance called nicotine which is super addictive to humans, so it can be really hard to quit smoking once you start. We’re not here to lecture you on humans smoking, there are others than can make the case for that far better than we can (if you want to know the full human risks visit: www.nhs.uk/smoking/)

We’re here to let you know that cigarettes and related products are bad for your dogs too, and not just because breathing in the smoke is bad. If dogs eat the cigarette, the chemicals inside the cigarette can lead to heart problems, breathing problems, blood pressure issues etc. Even eCigarettes and Nicotine patches can be really bad for dogs if eaten.
