Lauren Tween - Overall Winner from 2010Annual YKC Artist of the Year Competition 2012 Calling all members! Do you love art and dogs? Then make sure you enter our competition!

Our annual Young Kennel Club Art Competition is now in its fourth year and we hope that those new to the competition and those who have entered before will take part, we hope display your artwork at Crufts 2012.

The Theme

As 2012 is the Olympic year it means countries from all over the world are coming together to compete and try their best to win medals, we thought that this years theme for our competition should be based on: ‘Dogs from Around the World’

For ideas about different breeds from around the world you can source information from the Discover Dogs website www.discoverdogs.org.uk/breedsofdog here you can find out where breeds originated and their back ground.

Vanessa McAlpine, Events & Education Executive is on the judging panel “I’ve judged the competition for a few years now, and I am always amazed by the imagination and creativity of the aspiring artists that enter. I can’t wait to see what inspires themLorna Dandy - 2nd place in the 17 to 24 category 2010 for 2012”.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Boston Terrier: A real Yankee-Doodle-Dandy! Although he owes a little of his ancestry to the British Bulldog, the Boston Terrier actually came into being in the late nineteenth century in the eastern states of America when, in 1893, a mix of bull and terrier types produced the first pair of dogs that were to become the foundation of the breed.

Australian Cattle Dog: A medium-sized dog, greatly prized in his native Australia for his working ability, he is used for the control and movement of cattle in all environments. He is also known as the Australian Heeler, a name derived from the manner in which he manoeuvres cattle, crouching low behind them and nipping them on the heels.

Finnish Lapphund: The Finnish Lapphund is a survivor, he would have to be in order to cope with life in the harsh climate of Lapland. His original role in Finland was to herd reindeer, and he still does so, as well as sorting out cattle and sheep.
