Education

Try your luck at our canine crazy crossword

YKC members are the future of the world of dogs and as such we invest heavily in ensuring that they have the support that they need to help them to ensure their future in dog related activity.  Previously the Young Kennel Club has offered educational opportunities at its head office in London.

Have you ever competed in a YKC grooming competition and want to learn more?
Are you thinking of entering a YKC grooming heat but would like some expert advice beforehand?
Would you like to begin a career in grooming and would benefit from some professional guidance?
If you can answer yes to any of these questions then this is the event for you. The YKC Grooming Masterclass is the first of its kind aimed at YKC members to give you the opportunity to learn more about grooming. Not only is it a chance to learn new skills so that you can apply these to grooming your own dog but also to have a greater understanding of grooming as a profession. Opportunities such as this don’t come along very often and our two speakers have a wealth of knowledge and experience not to mention the many awards behind them! So make sure you apply today.

Venue: Kennel Club Building at Stoneleigh
Date: Wednesday 25th August 2010  Closing Date for Entries: Friday 30th July 2010

Careers with Dogs Day

For members aged between 14 and 24 years of age there is the chance to attend a ‘Careers with Dogs Day’.  The YKC members are the future of the world of dogs. They give up so much of their time to help out at events and put so much energy into dogs that we want to make sure they have all the knowledge available to them to help ensure their future in dogs.  The event aims to give YKC members the opportunity to attend talks and speak with professionals in a variety of canine fields.

The day usually ties in with the school half term, ensuring that as many members as possible can attend. The careers day will be hosted by the management team and will be held in the Kennel Club boardroom. Speakers will come from a variety of backgrounds and will aim to educate YKC members on all dog related jobs.  Previous speakers have included:

  • Dog Photography
    Grooming
Charitable Organisations (Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and Blue Cross)
Animal Shelters (Battersea Cats and Dogs Home)
    Veterinary Surgeons and Nurses

“I took part in a Dog Photography, Dog Grooming and a Dog Behaviour lecture. I was particularly interested in Photography and Paul Keevil, who gave the lecture, helped start my photography "thing". He took me two other YKC members to Discover Dogs 2008 to be press photographers for the Kennel Club. I am now a journalist for my college magazine and I am working on pushing my career forward. I also benefited greatly from the grooming and behaviour class and in September I am starting a distance learning Dog Behaviour and Psychology Course and I am on the waiting list for an Introductory Dog Grooming Course.  I would recommend everyone who is interested in the canine industry to take part in a career day, and I owe a lot to the people who helped me start my career choices” Lupe Van Der Stigchel
