Crufts Commentators Find Stars of the Future

Crufts commentators Nick Brooks Ward and Frank Kane and the voice of Crufts FM, Gary Champion, taught the tricks of the trade to Young Kennel Club members who hope to become the show’s voice of the future.  Eleven hopefuls from the Young Kennel Club, aged from 18 to 24, were given pearls of wisdom about what makes a good commentator at the Kennel Club offices in Mayfair.

They put their skills to the test in mock show scenarios and were given practical exercises so that they could hone their techniques for interviewing, commentating and doing live TV and radio presenting.  Amongst the tasks, participants were asked to do the commentary over agility clips from a previous Crufts and had to research a chosen breed and present their piece to the rest of the group.

Nick Brooks-Ward, Crufts commentator, said: “Everybody was clearly very dedicated but it was a real eye-opener for them as well, helping them to understand how much patience and hard work is needed before a commentator starts to speak. I am very hopeful about the future of these Young Kennel Club members and because they are really interested in dogs we have a good chance of finding the next voice of Crufts amongst them.”

"This was a well organised and informative workshop giving the younger generation an opportunity to understand what makes a good commentary and the different areas within the media in which it can be used".  Lauren Vincent
